Another tropical storm is on its way through the Caribbean and Central America. The 10th hurricane so far this season, Tropical Storm Julia, is expected to upgrade to a hurricane as it travels towards the southern Caribbean on Sunday.

Latest update from National Hurricane Center:

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has stated that Julia has sustained wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour and is currently located west-southwest of Curacao. Before it reaches Nicaragua and the Columbian Islands, the storm is highly expected to grow to contain wind speeds of up to 86 miles per hour.

Along the Nicaraguan coast, storm surges are expected to reach up to six feet tall as Julia turns into a Category 1 hurricane. The hurricane is expected to be near northwestern Venezuela and the Guajira Peninsula, situated at the northernmost point of South America.

As hurricane Julia moves across the southwestern Caribbean Sea, it’s expected to hit the Providencia Islands and San Andres Saturday evening. A Tropical Storm Warning was issued by the Colombian Government.

The NHC has forecasted the isolated areas of Central America will receive up to 15 inches of rainfall, while other parts may see between 5 and 10 inches. Rainfall in these large amounts can lead to flash flooding, mudslides, and other life-threatening conditions.

Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1st through November 30th each year, with its busiest month being September. This is attributed to the peak rise in sea temperature during this month as well as the low shear.
