U.S. Issues Level 2 Advisory For The Bahamas Over Increased Crime In Two Popular Areas

The U.S. Department of State has issued a Level 2 advisory to exercise caution when visiting the Commonwealth of the Bahamas in 2023. Burglaries, sexual assault, and armed robberies have occurred in Nassau on New Providence, Paradise Island, and Freeport on Grand Bahama. These are popular tourist areas with various resorts.

The advisory adds that the “Over the Hill” area (south of Shirley Street) in Nassau is an area of increased criminal activity. Travelers are also advised to be vigilant if they stay in rental vacation properties that do not have their own private security companies.

The State Department advises travelers not to physically resist any robbery attempts. Vacationers in rental properties should not answer the door for anyone unless they know the person who wants entry.

Travelers are advised to enroll in the Smart Traveler program if they are visiting the Bahamas or other countries. This is a free program for travelers that offers updated information on all popular tourist areas, including the islands of the Bahamas. The U.S. Embassy in Nassau, located at #42 Queen Street, will be able to assist you in an emergency.

Water Craft Advisory

According to the State Department advisory, tours and activities involving commercial watercraft are not well-regulated.

Travelers are advised to be extremely cautious when renting jet skis, small boats, and other watercraft. They should also know about any tour operator offering water travel on any of the islands. Watercraft may not be well maintained and operators may not have the required safety certifications, according to the advisory.

In addition, visitors are advised to never swim alone. Travelers must remain informed of weather conditions in the Bahamas, especially during hurricane season from June through November. Summer visitors can expect some rain during this season.

Visitors to the Bahamas are advised to be up-to-date on all vaccinations and consult the CDC page on health requirements for the Bahamas before traveling.
