This Unknown Town In South Of Spain Aims To Become The Next Digital Nomad Hotspot

To combat the rural exodus, 36 inland municipalities in the province of Málaga are actively seeking new residents. For this purpose, the platform ‘Come Live in a Town’ has been set up, where Spanish municipalities are looking for new residents. According to La Opinion de Malaga on Thursday, September 7, Benarraba, a small village in Málaga with 450 inhabitants, stands out.

Benarraba, which belongs to the Serrania de Ronda, is located in the valley of the Genal. According to the official website of the Andalusian Tourist Board, the town “thrives on forestry, agriculture and livestock, and enjoys a well-deserved reputation for artisanal pork products.” Its picturesque location makes it a popular choice for those seeking a retreat from the city, offering a tranquil hideaway among chestnut trees, pines, cork oaks and gall oaks.

Benarraba now promotes itself as a haven for “digital nomads” in an effort to stem the rural exodus.

The townhas made significant investments in teleworking facilities and technology in recent years. Its dedicated coworking and teleworking center, the “Digital Social Innovation Center,” was inaugurated in 2021. This facility, housed in a renovated 1789 home on Meson 10 Street, covers 520 square meters on three floors and has a fiber optic connection in each area.

Benarraba’s low-cost housing is another big draw, especially for younger generations who sometimes struggle with housing prices.

According to “Come Live in a Town,” the typical rent in the city is between €200 and €300 per month. Given that Malaga has some of the highest rents in Spain, this is particularly interesting.

In summary, Benarraba is poised to become a leading destination for digital nomads in Málaga due to its rich history, stunning natural environment and forward-thinking investments.
