Back in its heyday, it was a staging area for cattle drives the 1800s and gets its name for the numerous battles that took place. It received its name from the numerous battles between the Spanish conquistadors against the Comanche and Apache nations in the Bandera Pass. According to legend a red bandera (flag in Spanish) marked the boundary between the two after these battles took place.

In Bandera, Hill Country State Natural Area provides outdoor enthusiast with more than 5,000 acres of canyons and rolling hills. From camping to horseback riding to kayaking the Medina River, there is a ton to do here.

If you are looking for a kid-friendly outdoor adventure, Bandera City Park offers swimming, fishing and picnic areas. A must-stop is the Frontier Times Museum where guests can see rodeo demonstrations and enjoy weekly activities. Or head to the Bandera Natural History Museum for life-size replicas of Ice Age animals along with Latin American ceremonial historical artifacts and the New Spain Art Collection.
