As the societal effects of COVID have faded and a sense of normalcy has returned to day-to-day life, the travel industry is exploding. But with inflation accelerating and fuel costs up, so too is the cost of travel–especially air travel.
Accordingly, many travelers have been hunting for deals on flights this season. But what many travelers might not realize is that flight costs are correlated with the originating airport. Travelers can reap significant flight savings by departing from the right one.
For the best deals, East Coast airports come out on top, and on the East Coast, John F. Kennedy Airport in the winner. In fact, travelers can expect higher average savings on round-trip tickets from flights departing from JFK to locations around the world than any other airport in the nation.
JFK’s tops the list of cheapest U.S. airports to fly out of primarily because routes to Europe and the Caribbean–two of the most popular geographic destinations–are shortest from there. This requires less fuel and crew time, translating to a direct savings for travelers.

Although JFK boasts ten percent more of the cheapest economy class seats than any other airport in the country, Washington Dulles sits in second place due to its abundance of routes and airlines. Like JFK, Dulles’ location on the East Coast allows relatively short routes to Europe and the Caribbean.
Finally, taking the third spot is Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, which due to its exceptionally high volume of departing flights allows airlines to offer flight deals. Chicago’s airport has been also ranked as the best internationally connected airport in the U.S.
