According to Turespana data, Spain received more than 7.7 million international travelers in May, accounting for 87 percent of those who arrived in the same month in 2019, before the pandemic.
“Our islands are approaching pre-pandemic figures, with recovery percentages of over 95 percent which are favored by the return of one of our main markets, the British. Undoubtedly, one of the elements that, unlike what happened in 2021, is allowing a solid reactivation of the international tourists that our country receives,” the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Maria Reyes Maroto, has pointed out in this regard.
According to the same source, one in four visitors came from the United Kingdom and visited mainly the Balearic Islands. As an interesting fact, the same study found that 77.6 percent of travelers from the United Kingdom traveled on a low-cost airline.
In total, Spanish airports welcomed 1,979,969 passengers from the United Kingdom, an increase of 83.6 percent compared to 2019.
Furthermore, according to Turespana, a total of 1,216,275 visitors came from Germany, with the Balearic Islands as their preferred destination.
During the same period, Spain received a total of 644,663 Italian travelers, most of whom went to Catalonia and Madrid. According to Turespana data, eight out of 10 Italians flew on a low-cost airline. A total of 637,943 French passengers flew to the same destinations.
According to these figures, Italy and France saw a significant level of recovery with respect to 2019.
According to Turespana, Illes Balears had 1,675,941 passengers, Madrid 1,604,603 and Catalonia 1,535,533.
However, a stronger recovery in May was registered in the Canary and Balearic Islands.
