Tourism destinations in the Mexican Caribbean ended the first quarter of 2022 with the highest hotel occupancy rate in the last three years. It was 64.1 percent, 28 points higher than last year and 1.7 points higher than 2020.

According to statistics from the State Tourism Secretariat (Sedetur), Riviera Maya had the highest percentage of occupied rooms per night in the first quarter of this year, followed by Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Cancun, Puerto Morelos, and Chetumal.

Cancun, while not at the top of the list, had a much higher number of available rooms, making full occupancy less likely at the popular resort city.

The only place showing signs of decline is downtown Cancun, where occupancy rates are significantly lower. This is likely due to the fact that most of the upscale hotels are located along the hotel strip, closer to the beaches. 

The position is still remarkable considering that for the first time in Mexican history, hotels in certain areas are more expensive than those in the United States, as reported by Traveloffpath.

When it comes to visitors’ lodging preferences, 4-star hotels – and higher – are proving to be the most popular, with these hotels advertised at higher prices than those in the United States and Canada.

As of December 2021, the average price for a hotel room with 4 or more stars in Mexico was about $280.

Hotel occupancy is likewise at an all-time high on the other side of the country.

Domestic and international tourists surged by a record 13 percent in the first quarter of 2022, according to the Los Cabos Tourism Board.

Los Cabos received roughly 2.8 million visitors in 2021, marking a complete comeback in tourism activity. Los Cabos saw approximately 325,000 tourist arrivals in March 2022, an increase of 18% over the previous year.

“As a destination that has been challenged over the past few years by the pandemic and international tourism restrictions, we are glad to see tremendous growth driven by our unique business model and the demand among travelers for exclusive and authentic travel experiences,” said Rodrigo Esponda, Managing Director of the Los Cabos Tourism Board. 

“The pandemic gave us the opportunity to elevate our tourism offering, create new ways of working with our partners, and fine-tune our business model.”
