Playa Del Carmen Introduces New Tourist Fines For This Activity

This Thursday, the Regulation for the Prevention and Control of Water Pollution in Solidaridad came into effect, which includes fines of up to five thousand pesos (US$ 290) for people who pollute cenotes.

The new legislation was published on Wednesday and was approved by the Solidaridad City Council earlier this year following numerous complaints about cenote pollution.

It is a special regulation to penalize and monitor water care within the municipal jurisdiction and to control the supply and disposal of waste that could damage water resources.

The motivation behind this new provision, as explained by the collective body, is that it directly addresses the legal interest of water conservation despite existing environmental regulatory institutions.

The new legal norm also regulates economic activities that use water as a means to achieve commercial purposes, such as car washes, laundries, transportation of sanitary waste, and others.

In this case, the municipality, through Solidaridad’s Sustainable Environment and Climate Change Department, is responsible for verifying that the water is not polluted.

The document omits to assign legal value to the concessionaire Aguakan, which is currently responsible for water supply and sanitation in Solidaridad.

In the municipality of Solidaridad, environmentalists have identified at least 40 cenotes with contaminated water. It is expected that this regulation will lead to a significant reduction in pollution.

Most popular cenotes in the area

One of the most popular cenotes in Solidaridad is the Cenote Azul, known for its crystal-clear waters and lush surroundings, making it a perfect spot for snorkeling and swimming. Its shallow areas are ideal for families, while deeper sections cater to diving enthusiasts. Another famed cenote is Cenote Cristalino, characterized by its open-air layout and unique rock formations. This cenote is a haven for those looking to enjoy a serene dip in nature’s lap, with its clear, refreshing waters offering a rejuvenating experience.

Cenote Chaak Tun stands out for its impressive caverns and rock formations. Guided tours take visitors through its underground rivers and stalactite-filled chambers, providing a glimpse into the geological history of the Yucatan Peninsula. This cenote is particularly popular among adventure seekers and those interested in geological formations.

Cenote Eden, also known as Jardín del Edén, is another jewel in Solidaridad. Surrounded by lush greenery, this open cenote is a natural pool with deep and shallow areas, suitable for both relaxing swims and cliff diving. Its clear waters and abundant marine life make it an excellent spot for snorkeling.

Lastly, Cenote Chikin Ha, part of a larger cenote system, offers a unique experience with its diverse flora and fauna. Visitors can explore its underwater passages and observe the interplay of light and shadow in the waters, creating an almost surreal environment.
