New Low-Cost Airline PLAY Launches Flights Between U.S. And Iceland Starting At $129

Based in Reykjavik, Iceland, the fresh low-cost airline PLAY has launched new routes to 4 US hubs with fares as low as $129 one way.

For the past year, the Icelandic flag carrier has been serving continental Europe. But, with reservations rising bookings in the United States rising, it is ready to enter the US market.

PLAY’s first US cities will be Boston (BOS) on May 11th, Baltimore (BWI) on April 12th, New York (SWF) on June 9th, and Orlando (MCO) on October 1st.

New York Stewart Airport has less operating costs than other airports in the state, which allows PLAY to offer low price flights between New York and Europe.

“The relatively low traffic at Steward Airport allows PLAY´s aircraft to spend less time taxiing on the ground saving fuel which allows the carrier offering the lowest prices in an environmentally-friendly manner,” reads a press release.

Speaking about the new route to Orlando, CEO Birgir Jónsson stated that the airline selected the Florida route due to the high demand from both Iceland and other European countries.

“It’s a premium market,” he told Insider. “People [from Scandinavia, Iceland, and other EU countries] are going on quite expensive trips, they own houses or are going golfing, so it is a slightly different market than other low-cost destinations.”

According to Jónsson, these passengers tend to fly economy because of the current costs of long-haul flights.

“They are flying economy, so we can offer them a good product at a lower cost.”

Flights from Orlando will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays beginning October 1, while inbound flights from Europe will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from September 30.

The introductory fare is $129 one-way. The offer is applicable for roundtrip flights between September 2022 and April 2023.

All routes to London Stansted, Dublin, Paris, Berlin, Copenhagen, Brussels, Stuttgart, Trondheim, and Gothenburgcontinental include a stopover in Iceland’s Keflavik Airport.

With their ticket, passengers only get a seat and a personal item. PLAY does not offer WiFi or similar amenities but travelers can purchase an extra carry-on bag, extra legroom seats, checked luggage, and an onboard meal.
