According to anonymous sources cited by local newspaper El Financiero, Mexico has regained the highest rating for airspace safety from U.S. aviation regulators.
In 2021, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) lowered Mexico’s safety rating, preventing Mexican airlines from expanding their operations with new flights to the United States. Restoring the FAA’s Category 1 safety rating would allow airlines such as Aeromexico and Volaris to establish new routes to the United States and potentially enter into marketing agreements with U.S. airlines.
Asked whether Mexico had regained its Category 1 classification, an FAA spokesperson responded briefly by email, stating that the agency continues to provide assistance to the Mexican Civil Aviation Authority. Mexican officials have not yet responded to the comment request.
Mexican officials expect the category to be recovered, but official notification of the results will have to come from the United States agency once the results of the audit are processed.
A high-level source told El Financiero that U.S. auditors left satisfied after the audit but must wait for confirmation through official diplomatic channels.
“Confirmation of the official issue is still pending. The U.S. auditors are satisfied, but they still need to formalize it. The final document has yet to be written,” the official told reporters.
