Jamaica Receives Its First Million Visitors In 2022

Jamaica has already reached 1 million visitors in 2022, the Jamaican Ministry of Tourism and the Jamaican Tourist Board announced this week.

That number makes the island one of the most visited destinations in the Caribbean this year.

Traveler Brian Simmons was the 1 millionth visitor to arrive at Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay on JetBlue Flight 1479 from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. Simmons will receive an all-expenses-paid return trip.

“This moment is a testament to the confidence that the market shows in Jamaica as well as the strength, resilience and enduring appeal of Jamaica’s tourism product as we build back stronger,” said Edmund Bartlett, Jamaica’s minister of tourism.

The occasion also coincides with Jamaica’s 60th anniversary of its independence.

“We have been seeing a steadily increasing growth in stopover arrivals this year and, summer bookings pacing ahead of 2019 to be the strongest summer we have ever experienced,” added Director White.

“We encourage everyone to explore the island, connect with our people and learn about our culture so they will want to come back to Jamaica again and again,” added Bartlett.

The minister agreed that Jamaica is well-positioned for a successful 2022-2023 season. With additional Saturday flights from Austin, Texas, the country welcomed a new service to Sangster International on June 4.

He described the new service as part of “strengthening ties with the southeastern region of the U.S. market,” part of “building capacity to increase arrivals and develop a more robust route in the future.”

Jamaica’s early efforts to build a Global Resilience Center in Montego Bay, according to Bartlett, were vital to the country’s ability to combat the pandemic.

“As early as January 2020 we established a risk management task force and by March, when the pandemic was officially declared, Jamaica established a recovery task force,” Bartlett said.

“With that, we developed protocols. We brought in Price Waterhouse as consultants. The World Travel and Tourism Council gave its seal of approval, the Safe Travels certificate. We became the third country in the world to receive it.”
