Paris and other major cities in France continue to experience violent protests due to the killing of a teenage driver by a police officer. The shooting took place on 27th June and footage from a local woman was shared on the internet, resulting in riots and all-round anger.

The continued protests have led to shutdowns and curfews in some of the major cities. With the travel season beginning this summer and the Tour de France cycle race taking place, questions have been asked about whether traveling to France is safe.

Protests initiated in Nanterre, a suburb situated in the broader metropolitan region of northwestern Paris. Subsequently, demonstrations have taken place in various other locations surrounding the capital, including Montreuil, Gennevilliers, Garges-lès-Gonesse, Bezons, Asnières-sur-Seine, Neuilly-sur-Marne, Clamart, and Meudon.

Additionally, areas farther away such as Clergy, Guyancourt, Trappes, and Vigneux-sur-Seine have also experienced the impact of these protests.

All of these areas lie beyond the “Periphique” ring road, which encircles the central Paris “arrondissements,” where the majority of popular tourist attractions and accommodations are situated.

In other parts of France, the Elite RAID police force has been deployed to significant tourist cities in the south, namely Marseille and Bordeaux, as well as the northern cities of Lille.

Central areas of Paris where most tourist attractions and accommodations exist have not been affected by the protests. It means that travelers can still get an opportunity to visit key attractions like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. Also, rural areas or small tourist towns in France remain unaffected.

It is essential to note that some of the bus services operating in Paris were significantly affected by the violent protests. The Metro system is still under operation in Paris, as well as Eurostar rail services that link London.

It is unclear on the duration of the protests, and visitors to Paris and other regions in France are urged to regularly monitor the situation before making any travel plans.

Official Travel Advisories (U.S., UK, Canada)

On 30th June, a security alert was issued by the United States State Department urging citizens to stay away from the areas affected by the violent protests or any mass gatherings.

Because the protests have affected transportation significantly, the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office has also urged citizens to regularly monitor curfews and disruptions in public transportation.

Canadian Government also updated the travel advisory for its citizens visiting France stating: Exercise a high degree of caution

Most tourists have remained unaffected. Visits to France have been without any issues, meaning that it is still safe to travel to the country.
