Guanajuato: Voted As Mexico’s Most Beautiful City

With its rich, well-preserved colonial past, Guanajuato has been recently named the most beautiful city in Mexico. The vote of confidence was issued by none other than Mexico’s own Travel Awards.

Guanajuato is a sterling example of Mexico’s renowned colonial period. The capital of the State of Guanajuato boasts numerous nearly intact colonial architectural masterpieces. The city’s Old Town, or Ciudad Vieja, has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Guanajuato is one of the oldest, continually occupied sites in the Americas. The city was founded by Spaniards in the 16th century on the site of older indigenous American settlements.

The region’s history was dominated by silver mining. During the colonial period, Guanajuato was the world’s top silver exporter, reflecting the Spanish quest for precious metals when they arrived in the New World.

The Old Town consists of a network of winding streets and alleyways. As they stroll about, visitors will enjoy the distinctive golden color of many of the city’s architectural marvels.

At the top of the list of gorgeous buildings may be the Basilica of Our Lady Guanajuato, built-in 1671 in the Mexican Baroque style. The rich yellow color, accented with red detail, makes this domed church an iconic venue for visitors.

Although perhaps not as well known as other Mexican cities, Guanajuato has seen a steady rise in visitors during the decade leading up to 2018. This year, over 8 million travelers are expected to visit the city and enjoy its charm.
