Mexico has cracked the top 10 in terms of foreign exchange earnings from tourism. Miguel Torruco, Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism, announced that Mexico is now in ninth place according to data per international visitor for 2022 from the World Tourism Organization (WTO).

The North American country has jumped from 17th place in 2018 to a top 10 ranking for the second consecutive year. And what is even more promising is that Torruco projects that Mexico will capture $31.1 billion from international visitors by the end of 2023, 11.3 percent more than in 2022.

Further data showed that foreign exchange income rose to $28 billion in 2022, 41.7 percent higher than in 2021. This is due to prioritizing foreign exchange earnings from international visitors making tourism a tool for social reconciliation.

In terms of visitors, a total of 38.3 billion international tourists arrived in Mexico in 2022, a growth of 20.3 percent from its 2021 numbers. Mexico trailed only France, Spain, the United States, Turkey and Italy for the sixth spot in the WTO ranking for international tourist arrivals.

Following the pandemic, Mexico was able to achieve rapid recovery of the tourism sector thanks to policies implemented on tourists. From its vaccination strategy, development of standard bio-sanitary protocols and non-restriction of international flights, they were recognized by UNWTO Secretary General Zurab Pololikashvili for their rapid response.

Programs such as Green Angels, Magical Towns and now Magical Neighborhoods have created a positive impact on the tourism industry in Mexico. The joint work of the private sector and the three levels of government have assisted with a boost the economy and growth of foreign exchange earnings.
