The government of Benito Juárez (Cancún) is expecting a greater influx of tourists by the end of 2023, with which it hopes to surpass the 2022 figures.
Cancún, Mexico’s top tourist destination, plans to break visitor records again, with at least three points above the average hotel occupancy recorded in 2022, said Juan Pablo de Zuleta Razo, Municipal Secretary of Tourism.
The official said that they will also seek to increase the number of flight operations and exceed 30 million passengers at Cancun International Airport before December 28, when this terminal received 30 million travelers for the first time in 2022.
In the same sense, he said that the stage that runs from the second half of November into December is usually the time of the greatest tourist influx, so they hope that these goals can be achieved based on the behavior they have observed throughout the year.
Cancun Continues to Increase its Promotion at International Tourism Fairs
In order to achieve these goals, Zuleta reiterated that the municipal government continues to strengthen the promotion of Cancun at international tourism fairs with different events that consolidate it not only as a sun and beach destination but also as a destination with a wide offer in other areas such as sports, health or culture.
He highlighted that Cancun was recognized as “Leading Destination City in Mexico and Central America 2023” and “Leading Beach Destination in Mexico 2023” during the WTA Finals, with the Destination City award being the first in the city’s history.
“For the first time in Cancun’s history, in these 53 years, we have received the ‘Leading Destination City’ award. This speaks for its gastronomy, tourism diversification, culture, sports, and education.”
What travelers should know when visiting Cancun in high season
Visiting Cancun during its high season, which typically runs from December to April, offers a vibrant experience but requires some preparation. Here’s what travelers should know:
Crowds and Booking Ahead: High season means more tourists. It’s advisable to book flights, hotels, and activities well in advance to ensure availability and potentially better rates.
Prices: Be prepared for higher prices during this peak period, both for accommodations and activities. Budgeting accordingly is important.
Weather: The high season boasts warm, pleasant weather, perfect for beach activities. Pack suitable clothing, sunscreen, and hats for protection from the sun.
Beach Etiquette: Cancun’s beaches can get crowded. Respect other visitors’ space, and be mindful of local regulations, including any designated swimming areas.
Safety: While Cancun is generally safe for tourists, exercise caution as you would in any popular tourist destination. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, and use reputable transportation services.
Local Culture and Customs: Engaging respectfully with the local culture enhances the experience. Learn a few basic Spanish phrases, and be mindful of local customs and traditions.
Transportation: Traffic can be heavier during high season. Plan for extra travel time, especially when heading to the airport or popular tourist spots. Using public transportation, like buses, can be an efficient and affordable option.
Activities and Excursions: Consider booking popular tours and excursions in advance. This includes trips to famous sites like Chichen Itza, Tulum, and Xcaret Park.
Stay Hydrated: The warm climate, especially if you’re out in the sun a lot, necessitates staying hydrated. Always carry water with you.
Enjoy Local Cuisine: Don’t miss out on trying local Mexican cuisine. While resort food is convenient, exploring local eateries offers a more authentic experience.
Respect the Environment: Cancun’s beauty is part of its appeal. Respect the environment by not littering, staying on designated paths, and not disturbing wildlife.
Travel Insurance: It’s a good idea to have travel insurance, especially during peak seasons when there are more chances of flight delays and other unforeseen events.
