This winter, Cancun is on the verge of being sold out, with occupancy rates expected to reach up to 95%. Obviously, the actual numbers may be substantially higher, so everyone considering a trip should decide soon away.
Cancun was once again nearly sold out this summer, causing hotel prices to skyrocket.
With health worries becoming a thing of the past and Americans flocking to the nearest airport in search of sun, this trend will continue in the coming season.
The Mexican Caribbean as a whole and Cancun, in particular, have long been the most popular winter vacation spots for Americans. Winter is by far the finest time to travel, when the sargassum seaweed has entirely disappeared from the coast and the temperature reaches a comfortable 86°F. This is often between late November and late March.
With normalcy restored, Cancun not only continues to make progress but is also on track to break all previous records by receiving about 10 million visitors in a single season, which is above the previous record high of 2019 and undoubtedly above the lows of 2020 and 2021. The member of the National Economic Council for Tourism, Julián Balbuena, claims that occupancy should be between 90% and 95% this season.
Balbuena believes this highlights Cancun’s success and the fact that the city is seen as a gateway to the greater Riviera Maya, providing services to other, lesser-known destinations nearby such as Tulum and Playa del Carmen. Currently, Cancun is part of Mexico’s official “triad” of world-class resorts, along with Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos.
This is undoubtedly wonderful news for the tourism industry, which is expected to benefit the most, but it can also be seen as a cautionary tale for people who have not yet made travel plans or who are apprehensive of crowded Cancun beaches. For the first group, there is only one thing left to do, and that is to urgently secure a place in the sun.
