Between January and July of this year, more than 17 million travelers passed through Cancun International Airport.

The figure is more than 1.8 million higher than it was for the same period in 2019 and shows how steadily foreign travel has recovered after two years of entry bans and strict health regulations.

Visitors should be prepared for crowded terminals and long queues, as passenger numbers are record-breaking, with more than 600 flights a day.

Arriving and departing customers are advised to allow extra time for their trip due to ongoing highway construction around the airport. Some airlines even advise leaving for the airport up to five hours before departure.

Passenger numbers peak in the summer. Several records have been broken in recent months, especially in July when it comes to the popularity of Cancun.

According to the State Office of data collection, Quintana Roo receives over 400,000 tourists daily.

Statistics show how popular the Mexican Caribbean remains as a summer vacation destination. Cancun is at the top of Americans’ list of favorite vacation spots abroad.

With more airlines announcing flights to the region, with over 12% more travelers than in 2019, Cancun officials expect the upward trend to continue. If the current momentum continues throughout the year, it is very likely that the annual passenger record will be surpassed.

According to Southeast Airport Group (Asur), overseas travelers account for the majority of passenger traffic at Cancun Airport.

With nearly 11.8 million international tourists, most of the flights came from the United States and Canada, with European destinations in second place. The United States is the most important foreign market for Cancun, with flights from 44 destinations throughout the country.

There are currently 10 more flights than in 2019, with more than 6 out of 10 Cancun visitors flying from the United States. In the first seven months of the year, the airport handled 5.6 million Mexican passengers.
