Bali plans to increase the cost of Visa-on-Arrival (VOA) from Rp. 500,000 (US$34.84) to Rp. 1.5 million (US$104.52) for visitors from the 43 countries eligible for the program.

The VOA is valid for 30 days and can be renewed once for another 30 days for a fee of Rp. 500,000. (US$34.84).

Several tourism industry leaders in Bali have spoken out against these plans, claiming that raising visa fees at a time when tourism is just beginning to recover is inappropriate.

Ida Bagus Agung Partha Adnyana (Gus Agung), chairman of the Bali Tourism Board (Gabungan Industri Pariwisata-GIPI), stated that his organization and many associated stakeholders vehemently reject the plan to increase the VOA fee.

“We and 10 stakeholders object to the plan to increase the VOA [fee] three times,” said Partha Adnyana.

Partha Adnyana.stated that since the reactivation of the VOA on March 7, the number of international visitors to Bali has steadily increased.

He also warned that plans to raise the VOA fee could jeopardize current attempts to revive Bali’s tourism sector following the economic devastation caused by the pandemic.

In addition, he urged another participant in the conversation, Dony Oskaria, to speak at a government event in Jakarta about the protests in Bali over the VOA price rise.

Dony, who is a top official at two state-owned companies, has promised to help withdraw all suggestions to raise VOA fees.

He also said he would seek direct answers from government ministers on the issue. Meanwhile, Dony urged tourism workers to market and bundle their products to lure visitors to visit Bali.
