The visa, introduced last week in an effort to support the nation’s economic growth, allows foreigners who invest in the country to stay for five to 10 years.
According to a statement released by the Director General of Immigration, Silmy Karim, the OpenAI CEO will enjoy extended stays in the country along with access to priority screening and dedicated service lanes at airports, courtesy of the visa.
Karim expressed that the OpenAI CEO’s global renown holds the promise of advantages for Indonesia. He further noted that the nation is extending a warm welcome to the tech CEO as a gesture of appreciation for the potential resources he could bring to the table.
Although it is not known whether Altman has applied for a visa or made investments in the country, he traveled to Jakarta, the country’s capital, in June to discuss AI development. According to the press release, there are a number of golden visa categories that are not based on monetary investments. One of them is offered to people with international reputations who can help the country.
Indonesia has been actively enticing affluent digital nomads to its shores, with a particular focus on marketing Bali, the island province, as a prime destination for individuals seeking to work remotely.
Numerous other nations, such as New Zealand and Portugal, have introduced analogous “remote worker visas” in a bid to leverage the increasing trend of individuals working from distant locations.
