While other states have been experiencing fall conditions for weeks now, we are really just getting started in California.
Not sure where to go for your fall getaway this year? Keep reading for the top seven autumn destinations that will have you saying “eureka!” in no time.
Big Bear Lake
Big Bear Lake, which is just a short driving distance from Lake Tahoe, offers an attractive alternative if you do not want to take the chance of having to deal with crowds. Another upside is that fall is much less popular with tourists in this town than any of the other three seasons.
Nearly every tree in Big Bear Lake is alive with the vibrant colors of red, yellow, and orange leaves as they make their seasonal transition. This is something you definitely want to see.
June Lake Loop
June Lake presents you with a walking path and trees dotted with rich fall colors along the way. You will also want to head to the Minarets near the town of Mammoth Lakes each night for an unparalleled view of the setting sun.
The mountains near June Lake make for some pretty pictures all on their own. This is also true of the lake’s many waterfalls.
If you are feeling especially adventurous, the weather is still warm enough to go kayaking.
Lake Tahoe
The beauty surrounding Lake Tahoe simply cannot be rivaled, even if you do have to navigate around other tourists. Late October and early to mid-November are excellent times to take in the sights of this statewide treasure as fewer people tend to visit then.
Like many of the other must-see fall destinations in California, Lake Tahoe is brimming with seasonal colors. After you have spent the day in North Lake Tahoe looking at leaves, head to South Lake Tahoe to check out the bar scene.
Mammoth Lakes
The Mammoth Lakes offer hiking, the chance to dip your toes in hot springs, and awe-inspiring natural beauty. From the mountains located within the limits of the John Muir Wilderness Area to the numerous lakes, you never want to be more than a few feet away from a camera.
Wondering what else to do in the Mammoth Lakes area during fall? How about going for a hike, mountain biking, floating on a tube in the water, or horseback riding, just to name a few.
Napa Valley
From the vineyards to the rich orange leaves on the oak trees, things are changing quickly in Napa Valley. Whether you want to snap a few pictures of the changing leaves or visit a local winery, grab a sweater to stay warm on your outing.
Looking to enjoy small-town life in the country’s largest state? Then you will want to take in everything that Napa Valley’s St. Helena has to offer.
Sacramento
The capital city of California has plenty to of attractions for your group of autumn travelers, especially if you have yet to see the fall colors. You would expect nothing less from a city that earned the nickname City of Trees decades ago.
If you plan to head to Sacramento, do it soon. Leaves typically reach peak color here during the first two weeks in November.
Yosemite National Park
Yosemite National Park transforms into a breathtaking spectacle during the fall season. As the lush green meadows and towering granite cliffs begin to embrace autumn’s palette, visitors are treated to a landscape alive with warm hues of red, orange, and gold. The iconic waterfalls continue to flow, adding a mesmerizing contrast to the changing foliage. Cooler temperatures create ideal conditions for hiking, and the park’s diverse wildlife becomes more active.

The term last-minute shopping does not just apply to the big winter holidays. If you have yet to pick out the perfect Halloween pumpkin, you can find it in Apple Hill.
The city is a favorite of day trippers across the state for good reason. You have come to the right place if you crave caramel apples, apple pie, or want to take a good old-fashioned wagon ride.
Keep in mind that you may want to plan a mid-week visit if you want to avoid crowds.
