The Global Peace Index has recently released its 2023 rankings, and we have compared the updated safety data with information on the most popular countries for digital nomads to determine the safest destinations among them.
The list that we made should be only taken as an estimation as it involves GPI data for the whole country and remote workers might only live in certain areas of the country where political instability, crime, or other factors do not affect their digital nomad life. For example, digital nomads in Mexico stay in safe areas but the overall safety rating of Mexico as a country is low.
The Global Peace Index (GPI) is a comprehensive measure that quantifies the relative peacefulness of nations and regions around the world. It takes into account various factors such as levels of violence, crime rates, political instability, militarization, and societal safety and security.
For the estimation of the most popular DN countries, we have used data collected by Resume.io. Their analysis tracks Instagram posts with the #digitalnomad hashtag to identify the countries where contemporary remote workers are currently connected and engaged.
Here are the 20 most popular countries from the Resume.io list ordered by their position on the GPI rank:
Ireland has been ranked as no. 1 safest country for digital nomads, followed by Singapore, Portugal, Japan, and Switzerland.

The biggest jumps on the Global Peace Index list compared to 2022, were made by Argentina (+15), Thailand (+11), the Philippines (+10), and India (+9).
On the other side, the biggest drops were made by Ecuador (-18), Sri Lanka (-17), South Africa (-12), Morocco (-10), Panama (-7), Greece (-7), (Indonesia (-6).
