According to a survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of Americans working remotely tripled between 2019 and 2021. Remote work offers many perks, including the ability to travel, savings on the cost of commuting and more free time.
Not all cities offer the same level of convenience for remote workers. The survey looked at 10 metrics to rate the top 10 cities for remote working Americans aka digital nomads.
Atlanta ranks as the number one city for remote work based on its WiFi strength, low cost of living and options for leisure. It also offers many co-working spaces.
Next on the list, St. Louis, MO provides remote workers with lower than average rent and many entertainment venues. Pittsburgh comes in the third position thanks to its WiFi speed, high walkability score and strong biotech and tech employment industries.

Orlando, FL made the list with its weather, many parks and recreational opportunities and public WiFi density. Minneapolis ranks sixth and boasts many parks and a vibrant microbrewery, music and arts scene.
Tampa, FL offers 100% public WiFi coverage across the city and ranks seventh in the nation for digital nomads. Cincinnati ranked well for co-working space, walkability, WiFi coverage and speed and entertainment.
List of top 10 cities for remote work
Rounding out the top 10 list, Richmond, VA, Birmingham, AL and Buffalo, NY all offer great internet speed and density, many options for outdoor recreation and indoor leisure and easy access to airports.
Some other cities to consider include Fort Wayne, IN, which had the lowest cost of living in 2022.
