For some, Christmas can be one of the most stressful times of the year. And after the holidays finish, there might be some time needed to recover from it.
No matter whether you prefer the buzz of the city, active holiday skiing, or sunny winter escapes, we have compiled a list of the 10 best destinations in the U. S. to head to in January 2023. Here it is:
Jackson Hole, Wyoming
This winter wonderland features about 3,000 acres of both easy backcountry terrain as well as challenging slopes. Not into skiing or snowboarding? Don’t worry, there is still plenty to do in the lively base village, including shopping and fine dining.
You can also set off for an organized snowshoe wildlife adventure and spot moose, elk, mule deer, and even wolves.
What’s more, Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park are located right in Jackson Hole’s backyard, so you can stop by there for a day or two on your way home.
Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah
Set in the state next door, Bryce Canyon National Park is another amazing piece of nature to tour this winter. Even though it is usually frequented in spring or fall, the red rocks covered with white snow create a spectacular view. The whole park will also be less busy than during the peak season.
The best way to explore it is on snowshoes or cross-country skis. You can also join multiple astronomy programs and full moon hikes, for the sky is dark and dotted with stars in winter.
Miami for Easy Winter Escape
If Miami is on your bucket list, January is possibly the best time there is to visit it. All the crowds of families and spring-breakers are out of town, so not only will you have the city to yourself but you will be able to book a fancier hotel for an affordable price.
The weather is also much milder than most of the year in January. Visiting the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, the zoo, and Miami’s Art Deco architecture will be much more enjoyable without the high humidity.
Palm Desert, California
Nestled in Coachella Valley, right next to the famed Palm Springs, Palm Desert is a great mid-winter escape destination for those who would simply like to soak in some sun and chill.
The temperatures hover around 80 degrees, which makes it perfect for biking, hiking, or golfing on the area’s top-notch golf courses. After that, you can indulge in the town’s spas, boutique shops, and world-class restaurants.
Movie lovers will appreciate the Palm Springs International Film Festival which is happening in the first half of January. Make sure to book your pass ahead to not miss any movie!
Taos, New Mexico
It might be surprising for some to go hit the snow in New Mexico. But believe us, Taos Ski Valley is just a great alternative to all the well-worn ski resorts. With beginner slopes and steep runs, it‘s suitable for any level. Never touched skis before? You can book private lessons – they are very good there.
But this place isn’t just for winter sports enthusiasts. Taos Pueblo is home to rich Native American and Spanish culture, and is, therefore, a paradise for history buffs.
When you’re there, don’t forget to also drop over to the Harwood Museum of Art and the Taos Art Museum.
Kailua Kona, Hawaii
No list of winter escapes would be complete without Hawaii. Forget the busy Waikiki on Oahu though. This year, what’s really in is Kailua Kona.
This tropical paradise is set on the west coast of the Island of Hawaii and it boats sunny, dry weather all year around. Actually, it’s one of the warmest locations in the whole of the U.S.
Enjoy the powdery sand, swimming, snorkeling, and the five-star resorts with all they have to offer. The area is also famous for its amazing Kona coffee. So if you happen to visit Kailua Kona, make sure to take a trip to one of the local coffee farms.
Vail, Colorado
Another great destination to hit the slopes is Vail, Colorado. The ski resort boasts more than 5,000 acres of trails for both beginners and pros. What’s more, the views from the tops of the mountains are spectacular.
On the other hand, down in the Vail village, you can enjoy plenty of restaurants, boutique shops, watering holes, and heated streets and sidewalks.
There are also plenty of other activities to engage in besides skiing, including comedy shows, snowshoe tours, and art tours.
And the best thing about Vail? A round trip from New York can cost you as little as $375. So book early to get the best price!
Lake Havasu, Arizona
Known as the home base for trips around the nearby trails and deserts, Lake Havasu is a popular summer destination. With the combination of the inviting waters, that time of the year also turns into a crazy party zone.
However, in winter, it’s much calmer, and what attracts visitors the most is the annual Havasu Balloon Festival. Watch hundreds of colorful balloons rise, take a carnival ride, or launch your own paper balloon. This January, this event is for sure one of the most spectacular ones.
Park City, Utah
Are you both a winter sports enthusiast and a film fan? Stop right there, we have an amazing January trip tip for you.
Not only is Park City a world-class skiing and snowboarding spot, but it is also home to the largest independent film festival in the United States. Watch all the new movies, and meet the filmmakers and actors. If you ever need a break from it all, you can always take a snowmobile or a sleigh ride trip and explore the surroundings.
Death Valley National Park, California
Last but not least, there is the renowned Death Valley. The heat can be unbearable in summer, so why not visit it in winter? Not only you will be able to stay outside the whole day, but you will also avoid the crowds.
Enjoy the endless panoramic views all to yourself, check the lowest point of North America, and watch the unique wildlife or the star-lit night sky, Death Valley is simply a place to be for all adventure seekers.
Even though the days are pretty warm there in January, make sure to bring some extra layers of clothing as the temperatures tend to drop down significantly during the night.
