Overview: Royal Caribbean’s Wifi Packages & Smartphone App

Now more than ever before, cruise passengers are staying connected via their various smart devices and laptops — even during sea days.

Part of this is by near necessity — multiple lines are now having guests use their smartphones for everything from checking in and starting the muster drill to viewing restaurant menus. Of course, there are still ways around this that won’t require travelers to have a smartphone with them at all times if they really don’t want to, but it’s much easier if they do.

On top of that, many people like to have their devices on hand just because they want to be able to message friends, post on social media, catch up on the latest episode of their favorite TV show, or — gasp — keep on top of work and stay connected with their colleagues.

Here, we’re going over the internet packages that Royal Caribbean offers so you can decide which might be right for you, as well as giving you an overview of the line’s handy-dandy smartphone app.

Royal Caribbean Internet Packages

Royal Caribbean offers two different internet packages that interested guests can choose from: Voom Surf and Voom Surf & Stream. Deciding which wifi package is best for you and your family is going to come down to what you’re looking to do while on board.

To purchase a package, log into your Cruise Planner on the Royal Caribbean website. Royal Caribbean’s wifi pricing is not fixed; it varies depending on factors such as the ship, itinerary, and number of devices used. The more devices you add to the package, the cheaper the per-device, per-day cost will be.

If you already have a cruise booked, log into the Cruise Planner to see exactly what each package will cost for your sailing. Keep in mind that it will be cheaper if you purchase ahead of time vs. waiting until you get on the ship.

Voom Surf

The Voom Surf package is the cheaper, more restricted version of Royal Caribbean’s two options. It includes the ability to browse the web, send and receive emails, and chat on messenger apps such as WhatsApp or Signal.

As an estimate, for Voom Surf you can expect to pay around $13-$16 per day for one device.

Wifi speeds are throttled on Voom Surf, so if you need faster internet, choose the package below.

Voom Surf & Stream

Royal Caribbean touts its Surf & Stream package as the full internet experience. Faster speeds and the ability to stream make this the better option for those who will be spending more time online, or who need to video chat with friends and family back home.

This package includes everything the Surf one does, plus the ability to live stream and post on social media; stream movies, TV shows, and music; and video chat.

As an estimate, Voom Surf & Stream will cost you around $18-$20 per day for one device.

The above price estimates are based on buying wifi for the entire cruise; you can also purchase a 24-hour pass for around double what the per-day price is mentioned above.

The Royal Caribbean App

Royal Caribbean’s smartphone application is available on both Apple’s App Store as well as the Google Play store for phones using the Android operating system.

The app is free to download, and it is recommended that you download it ahead of your cruise — not only because you can use it for various things pre-cruise — but also because it’ll likely be easier than trying to download it on the ship’s internet.
