One of Carnival Cruise Line’s ships assisted the U.S. Coast Guard with a rescue over the weekend.

At approximately 1 a.m. on Saturday, Carnival Magic crew responded to a distress call from a stranded mariner whose sailboat was disabled around 69 miles off the coast of Port Canaveral, Florida.

The vessel’s crew immediately notified the Coast Guard, and a MH-60 Jayhawk from the USCG Air Station in Clearwater was dispatched to rescue the man.

According to a tweet from the United States Coast Guard Southeast Twitter account, once rescued the man was transferred to Holmes Regional Hospital in Melbourne, Florida for further evaluation.

International Maritime Law states that the captain of a vessel has a moral obligation to render assistance to those in distress at sea, without regard to their nationality, status, or the circumstances in which they are found.

Currently, Carnival Magic is operating a schedule of six and eight-night voyages to the eastern and southern Caribbean from Port Canaveral. In May, the ship will reposition to Norfolk, Virginia to offer mostly four to six-night Bahamas voyages.

In June, Carnival Magic will move to New York, offering eastern Caribbean, Bermuda, and Canada/New England sailings into early fall. 

In October, the ship will return for four voyages out of Norfolk before continuing south back to Port Canaveral for the winter.

At 128,048 gross registered tons, Carnival Magic was launched in spring 2011 as the line’s second Dream-class vessel.
