Norwegian Cruise Line’s (NCL) second Prima-class ship, Norwegian Viva, has been delivered by the Fincantieri Shipyard in Italy. The Miami-based cruise company received the vessel on Thursday morning, just one week shy of its maiden voyage on August 10.

Before Viva’s initial sailing, a flurry of preparations ensued to ready it for its first guests. Crew members are busy learning the ship’s layout and operations. Performance casts are practicing their roles, and retail and dining establishments are being set up. 

After heading for Greek and Mediterranean islands, the cruise ship will return to Miami for its christening on November 28 with godfather Luis Fonsi. From December 2023 to March 2024, it will homeport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, before embarking on a series of Caribbean voyages.

Design Features and Inspirations

According to Fincantieri, they focused on passenger freedom and flexibility in Norwegian Viva’s design by offering more dining and entertainment options. It has a theatre-style showroom that can be converted into a huge dance hall. It also features an expansive wraparound promenade and a three-level go-cart racetrack. The suites are bigger and offer an exclusive elevator, lounge, outdoor pool, and restaurant.

Other notable touches include more cabins and outdoor spaces closer to the water. The ship’s machinery has also been placed midship to enhance its performance and weight distribution.

Pleased with the delivery, NCL President David Herra commended the shipyard’s work by saying, “Ships as stellar as those of the Prima Class are only possible in collaboration with an incredible shipyard like Fincantieri…we are beyond excited to bring this spectacular ship to life as we welcome guests aboard next week.”

Guest Amenities Sans Beetlejuice: The Musical

While some guests might be disappointed that the onboard debut of Beetlejuice: The Musical will not be part of its inaugural sailing, there are other amenities to be excited about. After all, Viva still offers relaxation through the Mandara Spa, the fastest slides at sea (The Rush and The Drop), dining, a sculpture garden (The Concourse), and the line’s first glass bridge, Oceanwalk.

Measuring 965 feet in length and weighing 142,500 gross registered tons, Viva can accommodate up to 3,219 guests. Already, it’s known for being one of the most spacious cruise ships among contemporary premium vessels.

Norwegian Viva follows the Norwegian Prima, which debuted last summer in Europe.
